Friendship is … …power sharing People sometimes say things like “Information is power”. It is often used as an excuse for withholding information in order that we might gain power. But isn’t that sad? And I want to say to you today that it is less than Christian. True Christians are people who know what Jesus said and did and follow his teaching and example. One of the things he said was this… It was the night before he died. Jesus was having a final meal with his disciples when he said “I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” (John 15.15) I think that is truly amazing. Almost everyone would say Jesus was a great teacher and I believe he is “God of God, light of light, very God of very God” and yet he says “I call you friends for I have told you everything”. I want to encourage us to follow Jesus example; to stop withholding information because information is power and instead to start power sharing and make everything known. How different would the news be if the reporters and the politicians were friends like this? How different would our families be if we were this open and honest with our spouses and children? And why not? Surely life would be a load more enjoyable if we had a larger circle of friends. If Jesus is God, then he had the power to be domineering but he chose to enter into a side by side relationship with us. The relationship of friends. Let’s follow his example and be open about what is going on in our lives. |
